Guest Post: Don't Fear The Banana!

June 16, 2015 Guest Blog

Bananas can be a subject of debate when it comes to toning up your physique because of their supposedly "evil" carbs and sugar content, but is the banana really that bad for you if you're trying to build a lean, tone physique?

We'd all much rather reach for a candy bar or ice cream. But if you're serious about your physique, a banana may be your sweet alternative. In the past, bananas have been frowned upon by "physique competitors," fitness guys and gals alike. But hear us out, bananas can be a healthy and amazing fruit for you and your diet!

Bananas are one of the best fruits for your health for many reasons. According to WebMD, this fruit is not only great for your heart, but it also helps your muscles. Bananas are incredibly rich in potassium, an electrolyte that is crucial for muscle contraction. Potassium also helps to regulate blood pressure and can help your stomach ward off those nasty nausea attacks that you get from a night out.

Furthermore, bananas are loaded with potassium, which is totally critical for muscle contractions and bone health, making this is an awesome pre-workout energizer. Loading up on potassium will also help balance out an excess of sodium (i.e., salt) floating around in your bloodstream, which can often build up in our system after binging on snack foods like potato chips. This helps since many of the processed foods we eat everyday are loaded with sodium. Not to mention, a single banana can contain up to 450 mg of potassium to help clear up that excess sodium!

But the humble banana doesn't stop there. A medium-size banana of about 126 grams packs a light 110 calories, 30 grams of carbs and 1 gram of protein—sure, not enough to pack on the muscle fibers, but that's what fish and other protein-packed foods are for.  The WebMD website also says that bananas are loaded up with Vitamins A, C, B6, iron, magnesium, dietary fiber, manganese, niacin, riboflavin and folate.

While bananas may contain some natural sugars, they're also packed with other nutrients that help your body work at maximum efficiency. So don't fear the banana!
