Fiber is an important part of any diet but did you know it can actually help you with your weight loss as well?

A Little Background on Fiber
Fiber comes in two forms: soluble and insoluble. These two forms of fiber act differently in your body but both play an important role.

Soluble Fiber
Soluble fiber can lower the bad LDL cholesterol by interfering with the absorption of dietary cholesterol. This type of fiber attracts water and forms a gel in the digestive tract that helps to slow down digestion. This is why eating foods like oatmeal, apples, pears, beans, and carrots help you feel fuller, longer.

Insoluble Fiber
Unlike soluble fiber, insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water. It passes through the digestive system intact. This process speeds up the digestive process and prevents constipation and is considered gut-healthy fiber because of their ability to add bulk to the diet. Eating foods like whole wheat, barley, couscous, raisins, grapes and corn will help get things moving along.

Fiber and Weight Loss
In one study from the University of Massachusetts Medical School participants were asked to either follow a structured diet from the American Heart Association or instructed to simply increase the amount of fiber they would eat to 30 grams per day. Neither group was asked to change their exercise regimens. After a year, the two groups lost about the same amount of weight! By simply increasing their fiber intake with no other dietary changes one group lost the same amount of weight as the group on a structured program.

What This Means For You
Does this mean that fiber is the secret to weight loss? Probably not alone. Combining both a lower calorie diet and an increase in the amount of fiber you consume could yield much better results and help you lose more weight.

How to Increase Your Fiber Intake
