When it comes to cooking and eating healthily, it’s easy to think that you don’t have the time or patience.

After all, opening a frozen package is far easier that cooking a homemade dinner –right? It may surprise you to learn that there are many fast hacks that allow you to cook meals that not only taste good but are nutritious as well! Cooking with steam is a great way to create quick and delicious meals.

Here are a few tips to get your steaming efforts off to a great start:

Why Steam?
Steaming is a healthy alternative to frying or cooking with lots of oil. In many ways, it’s also a better option than boiling. When vitamins such as vitamin B and C come into contact with boiling water, there’s a chance they can be damaged. Steaming on the other hand, results in far less damage to these nutrients, keeping a higher vitamin content in the foods your eating.

In addition to the health benefits, steaming is also a fast option for those who are short on time. Steam cooks food very quickly and also allows you to cook both meat and veggies at the same time. Cooking everything in the same pan allows you to save on prep time as well as clean up.

What to Steam
When it comes to steaming, there certainly are some foods that are better candidates than others. Most vegetables are great for steaming– asparagus, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes and carrots to name a few. Meat such as chicken and fish, specifically shellfish, are great for steaming as well. Fish is a great candidate for steaming since the steam helps to prevent the delicate meat from drying out.      

How to Steam
To start, fill your steamer with 2 inches of water and bring it to a boil before dropping your vegetables into the basket. You can steam different types of vegetables in the same pan, as long as you start with the food that needs to be steamed the longest add the faster-cooking veggies as the time counts down. You can also steam your meat and vegetables together, making for a simple, clean, and healthy meal! Just remember: steam is hot! Be careful not to open the lid toward yourself.

 

Steaming is a great way to eat healthier when you’re pressed for time. Involve your whole family and choose recipes together that not only taste great, but are great for you as well!
